Philex Mining Corporation
Philex Mining Corporation was incorporated in the Philippines in 1955 to engage primarily in mining activities. Its shares are listed in the Philippine Stock Exchange.
The Company has operated for the past 50 years the Sto. Tomas II deposit at Padcal, Tuba, Benguet Province, island of Luzon. The Padcal mine was the first underground block cave operation in the Far East. Total ore mined to year-end 2007 was 323.3 million tones, with a metal production of 878.8 million kilograms (1,940.5 million pounds) of copper in concentrate, and 157.7 million grams (5,073.4 thousand ounces) of gold and 173.7 million grams (5,596.1 thousand ounces) of silver in concentrate and bullion form. The Padcal mine is the only remaining copper-gold operation in the Philippines.
In July 1996, the Company's gold claim holding and assets, including the Bulawan mine, were spun-off to Philex Gold Philippines, Inc. (PGPI). Through a swap of shares, ownership in PGPI was subsequently transferred to Philex Gold Inc. (PGI), a Canadian subsidiary. PGI was listed in the Toronto Stock Exchange in October 1996 following an initial public offering of its shares to primarily North American and European investors. PGI shares are now listed in the TSX Venture Exchange. The Company's ownership in PGI is currently 81%. The Bulawan mine in Negros Occidental, Negros island commenced commercial production in January 1996, which continued until 2002 when the mine was decommissioned and placed on a care and maintenance basis.
From 2001, PGPI focused on its North Property where the Boyongan copper-gold porphyry deposit in Surigao del Norte was discovered in August 2000 under a joint venture with Anglo American Exploration (Philippines) B.V. PGPI subsequently entered into another joint venture agreement with FEC Resources in 2005 to fund exploration of PGPI's Lascogon gold project under Lascogon Mining Corporation.
In 2005, Brixton Energy & Mining Corporation was incorporated to own, explore and develop the Company s coal property in Diplahan, Zamboanga. In 2007, Philex Petroleum Corporation was also incorporated as the Company's principal vehicle through which investments in oil properties can be made. Universal Motors Corporation
Universal Motors Corporation (UMC), the country's largest and oldest 100% Filipino-owned assembler and distributor of Nissan Light Commercial Vehicles, has proven in its 54 solid years of experience in the local automotive industry that resiliency is an essential key to success. With the visionary leadership of its founders, the commitment of the Lee family, the support of the employees, dealers, and business partners, the company has been consistently successful in providing the Philippine market with automotive products of exceptional quality and affordability, bearing the world-renowned Nissan brand, to include the ideal business partner Nissan Urvan, the 4x4 luxury SUV Nissan Patrol Super Safari, and the newest addition to the formidable Frontier breed of pick up trucks, the Navara sport utility truck.
It all started way back in April 1954 when the Lee brothers, Anthony, Thomas, Henry, William, Charles, Silvino, Victor, and partners, came up with a paid up capital of P125,000.00 and formed UMC. In October 1955, the first locally assembled Mercedez Benz rolled out of its assembly plant located at P. Casal in Mandaluyong City. The rest of the Lee siblings joined the company in 1958. Over the years, UMC had built a strong reputation of superior quality assembly of Mercedez Benzes.
In 1971, UMC entered into an agreement with Nissan Motor Company Limited of Japan and a year after, assembled and distributed Datsun (former name of Nissan) passenger cars, such as the 180B and 200C models. From this agreement flowed the transfer of technology in terms of Japanese assembly operations and design.
In the early 1980's UMC concentrated on the production of Nissan light commercial vehicles (LCV's). This was a major paradigm shift for the company since LCV's at that time, did not enjoy the kind of popularity that would encourage anyone to boldly venture into assembly operations. UMC had foresight, took on the challenge, moved forward. Being one of the pillars of Philippine automotive industry UMC has always been known for its commitment to customer and product satisfaction. Even when faced with crisis in 1984, while other brands have either closed down or pulled out of the country, UMC stood its ground, ventured forth and even built a stronger brand image for Nissan light commercial vehicles as it continuously strives to support and provide its customers, partners and Filipinos, global quality vehicles that fit local needs. Much like a bamboo tree that weathers a storm the company remain strong, steady and resilient even through tough times.
UMC's hard work bore much fruit, earning the Customer Satisfaction No. 1 (Sales and After-sales ) Awards in the years 1993, 1995, 1996, 1997, and 1998. In addition to the years mentioned, it also achieved Sales Satisfaction No.1 position in 1994,1999, 2002 and 2006. In 2000, UMC propelled the Nissan Frontier as the best selling pickup four years in a row from 2000-2004. A feat no other manufacturer has to date, been able to achieve.
True to its history of being a pioneer, UMC was again the first auto company to institute a program that directly ties vehicles to poverty alleviation. The industry's first Entrepreneurship-Corporate Social Responsibility program called "Ur Van, Ur Business" (UVUB) program was born out of radical shift in thinking with the underlying principle of helping others help themselves, using the Nissan Urvan as a self-liquidating mobile business venture that is easy to start, coupled with an integrated corporate social responsibility program that helps the poorest of the poor become self-sufficient micro-entrepreneurs resulting in a win-win solution for all. So far UVUB has helped more than 1,680 families and created over 3,000 jobs as of 2007 since its inception in March 2006. And the crusade continues as UMC reaches out to more Filipinos through its Asenso Negosyo Academy (ANA), a free roving school, another first in the industry aimed to teach our buyers the basic entrepreneurial skills as well as tools to help them sustain and manage their business so it succeeds year in and year out.
Embracing Nissan Global's tagline SHIFT, UMC for its part has fully reflected the very meaning of SHIFT by enriching people's lives as the company espouses a higher purpose with the use of its vehicles as a vessel to continuously make a difference in other people's lives.
